GETTING TO LONDON/THE UK:
  • VISAS TO THE UNITED KINGDOM:

If you are a US Citizen (which is most of you reading this) traveling to the UK, you do not need a visa to enter the country.

    However…

In 2025, the UK instituted what is called an Electronic Travel Authorisation, or ETA.

The fee is £10 (~$12.50 USD) per person. The authorization lasts for 2 years, and you can enter the UK as many times as you’d like in that time.

!!!IMPORTANT!!!: THE ETA IS MANDATORY FOR ALL VISITORS TO THE UK

    APPLYING FOR AN ETA:

Applying for an ETA to enter the UK is done online or through the UK ETA app.

For what it’s worth, the UK government website recommends to use their app, as taking a self portrait is part of the application process.

    ONLINE LINK TO APPLY

To apply, click on the link at the bottom of the page that says “Continue application online.”

    App Store Links:

    Apple App Store

    Google Play Store

  • You made it! Welcome to the UK—many biscuits of cups of tea to be had ahead.

Regardless of your port of entry, it is HIGHLY recommended that you use the Passport E-Gates for your quickest entry—you’ll get to skip past talking to a border agent entirely.

    HOW TO USE PASSPORT E-GATES

Once you’re past Immigration and Customs, go ahead and collect you baggage. We’ll chat through how to leave the airports next.

THINGS TO REMEMBER IN THE UK:

Like any other country you travel to, it’s always helpful to remember that you are, in fact—a guest. Here are just a few quick tips if it’s your first time visiting:

  1. Stand on the right on escalators, especially in Tube stations

  2. When crossing the street, look to the left. …They don’t have it painted on every road for no reason!

  3. Queuing up is taken seriously – please don’t skip the line!

  4. Public toilets aren’t always free

  5. Contactless payment is used far & wide – You can tap to pay just about anywhere—including the London Underground.

  6. Not everything is open late – many places close by 6–7pm outside the city centre, and the Tube has limited night services.
